For portable use, monocrystalline panels are almost always the right choice. They deliver higher efficiency per square foot, which matters enormously when you're working with a foldable panel. Thin-film panels are lighter and more flexible, but they sacrifice 5-10 percentage points of efficiency.
A panel's efficiency rating tells you what percentage of the sunlight hitting it gets converted to electricity. In practical terms, the higher the efficiency, the smaller and lighter the panel can be for a given wattage. For DIY rooftop installs where space is limited, higher efficiency panels allow you to fit more watts on the available roof area.
ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) is a fluoropolymer coating that's more scratch-resistant, more transparent, and lasts significantly longer than the cheaper alternative. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is used in budget panels â it yellows over time, reducing output, and is more prone to cracking under UV exposure. If you're buying a portable panel you plan to use for years, ETFE is worth paying extra for.
