Always Oversize by 25%

Your actual energy use is almost always higher than you initially estimate. Add a CPAP machine, a more powerful fridge, or a power tool and you'll wish you had more capacity. Build in 25% headroom from day one.

Wire First, Then Connect Batteries

Run all your wiring with the battery disconnected. Connect the charge controller to the battery first, then the panels to the controller — never panels before controller. A wiring mistake with panels connected can destroy your controller instantly.

Shade Is the Enemy

Even partial shading of one panel significantly reduces the output of your entire string. If your panels are in series, shade one panel and you lose a proportional fraction of the whole string's output. Use a parallel or series-parallel configuration and consider a shade-tolerant MPPT controller (Victron SmartSolar is excellent for shaded installs).
